The purchase and use of the body of a child for sexual gratification is an abominable act and a desecration of the human spirit. We must all do what we can to reduce this deplorable practice.
Senator Landon Pearson

ICCEC is a bridge between survivors and those who can help end the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). Our work includes advocacy, coalition building, curriculum development, speaking engagements and research. We are registered in Canada as a non-profit organization. An international volunteer board of directors and a small staff carry out our operations.

Advocacy

We advocate on behalf of sexually exploited children and youth so that their voices will be heard:

Prepared by Cherry Kingsley, Special Advisor ICCEC regarding the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC), 2003.

[view PDF 348KB]

Prepared by Cherry Kingsley, Special Advisor, ICCEC regarding spending and other measures to be taken to ensure progress in investing and caring for, all members of Canadian society, 2003.

Coalition building

We link sexually exploited youth with professionals (front line workers, policy makers and others) to increase the effectiveness of strategies and solutions to combat CSEC. Some coalitions ICCEC has recently helped to build are:

BC Coalition of Experiencial Women.*
We engaged the expertise of experiential women and youth, established a formal consultation process with community leaders, and developed strategies to ensure the protection and dignity of youth and women working in the sex trade and in commercial sexual exploitation. The development of this coalition was funded by Status of Women Canada,, BC/Yukon Region.

*Canadian Coalition of Experiential Women is now in development. The first meeting is scheduled for Fall of 2004 in Ottawa and will also be funded by Status of Women Canada.

Expert Seminar – Children As Partners. Victoria, Canada, August 2002.
We worked with our community partner, the International Institute for Child Rights and Development (IICRD) at the University of Victoria to ensure participation of Canadian children at this seminar.

Curriculum development

Still under development, our curriculum will help professionals work more effectively with CSEC survivors.

Working With Sexually Exploited Children and Youth: A Practitioners Guide
We developed this curriculum in partnership with Senator Landon Pearson and the International Institute for Child Rights and Development (IICRD) at the University of Victoria. When complete, it will feature 5 stand-alone modules, which together comprise a post-secondary course on the issues. It also includes a train-the-trainer package.

Speaking engagements

Inspiring speaker Cherry Kingsley accepts bookings to deliver keynote addresses or position papers at conferences and meetings. She promotes a participatory, rights-based approach to the development of legislation, services and programs.

Her commitment to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children has brought her before audiences at the UN General Assembly, the Second World Congress Against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, and the annual conference of the International Association for the Treatment of Sex Abusers. She is an informed, powerful voice against CSEC.

Cherry is scheduled to attend the meeting of the UN Working Group on Contemporary Forms of Slavery in Geneva in June 2004 where she will address the commercial sexual exploitation of children and youth.

Research

RCMP Youth Strategy Research Project, July 2002.
We contracted with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to consult with sexually exploited children and youth across Canada to determine policing issues. Recommendations based on this research are helping to develop a Canadian Youth Strategy.

Current Projects

National Coalition of Experiential Women
In combating CSEC, people who have experienced sexual exploitation as children have expert knowledge. The National Coalition will give a voice to women with this experience and enable them to contribute to actions that address the commercial sexual exploitation of children.

Girl's Advocacy Project
Located in Prince Rupert, this project will provide a model for involving experiential girls in addressing the issue in their own communities subject to funding.

Follow-up to Sacred Lives
Developed in partnership with Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, this project will work with Inuit youth.
